About pharmacognosy department
The Department of Pharmacognosy is one of the main and unique departments of the Faculty of Pharmacy, and does not exist in any other practical university: it teaches courses on medicinal plants, pharmaceuticals, chemistry of natural products, quality control of crude drugs and many others. The department's courses aim to introduce students to pharmacology and the importance of teaching this science's courses in obtaining sources of food and medicine from natural products (plants, animals, and minerals).
The department teaches courses that teach students how to identify whole or powdered forms of medicinal plants, as well as biologically active chemical components such as alkaloids, volatile oils, glycosides, vitamins and mineral salts. The course then moves on to studying the chemically active components, methods of extracting them from natural sources, and methods of determining their structural organization.
In this section, students work on studying methods of analysis. In the final year, students study courses on alternative herbal treatments and quality control of herbal medicines using modern chromatographic and spectroscopic methods to standardize these medicines.
